Thermoforming
.
. . is using heat to form/shape plastic materials.
Thermoforming differs from VACUUM
FORMING in that thermoforming does not necessarily
soften the entire sheet or use vacuum to aid in shaping the
part. Thermoforming will either heat a full sheet or
just a specific area of a sheet of plastic. Commonly a
CNC ROUTED piece of plastic
is heated in a specific line or "strip" to allow a
piece to be bent along the softened strip while the
remaining piece stays rigid & is then cooled to it's new
shape. Another common form of thermoforming is Drape
forming. Drape forming is when an entire sheet of
precut or blank cut material is heated until soft & is then
placed on a form using only its own weight or light pressure
until cooled.
